Dr. Sonja Szymeczek
Dr. Sonja Szymeczek is a native North Carolinian. She hails from Kannapolis, a small town near Charlotte. She attended North Carolina State University for Animal Science, graduating in 1989. From 1990-1992, Dr. Sonja served in the United States Peace Corps working with goat farmers in Jamaica. She started veterinary school in 1992 at NCSU-College of Veterinary Medicine. After Dr Sonja received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1996, she continued her training with a rotating small animal internship at Washington State University in Pullman, Washington. She then taught surgery at NCSU-CVM for many years while also in a small animal surgery residency program. After completing the surgery residency, she completed the surgery application process established by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons, including the publication of research results and passed an intensive 3 day exam to become a board certified member of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons in 2004. Her main interests lie in wound management, soft tissue and orthopedic surgery. Dr. Sonja is also certified in PennHIP radiographs.
Dr. Sonja worked as a Veterinary Surgeon with the Veterinary Centers of America (VCA) for 9 years. After that she helped a local veterinary hospital start a branch clinic. In April 2015, she joined The Vets Pets working to start the Points East Veterinary Specialty Hospital of Wilson and the Points East Veterinary Specialty Hospital of Greenville.
Dr. Sonja is married to a native North Carolinian, John, from Washington, NC. They have 3 daughters, 2 dogs, 2 cats and 3 fish.
Amy, Diagnostic Medical Sonographer
Amy is a native Floridian, born in Miami, FL. After hurricane Andrew hit, her mom was transferred to Charlotte with the company she worked for. Amy moved to Harrisburg, NC when she was 8 years old, and resided until there until she was 19, before moving back to Florida. While she lived in Florida, Amy was a veterinary technician for almost 10 years before attending Keiser University to become a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer. After graduating, she found Dr. Sonja looking for a sonographer and now has her dream job performing the ultrasounds for Points East Specialty Hospital.
In her spare time, she enjoys trail riding, boating, and camping with daughter, Alanna and her pitbull, Kyana.
Cassi, Veterinary Assistant
Cassi grew up on her family’s dairy and produce farm in Nazareth, Pennsylvania. That is where she first realized her love for animals. She was a member of a local 4H club and showed beef and dairy cows. She received her Associate’s Degree in Applied Science from North Hampton Community College. She then completed a certification in Surgical Technology from St. Luke’s Hospital in Pennsylvania. She was working as a Human Surgical Technologist until she joined Points East Veterinary Specialty Hospital. Cassi loves the transition from the human side back to her childhood passion for animals. She is excited to be on this journey.
Roxanne has worked in veterinary hospitals and shelters since 1999. She was born and raised in Annapolis, Maryland. Roxanne moved to Greenville in 2017 and joined the team at Points East Veterinary Specialty Hospital in 2018. She lives with her boyfriend George, his two children, and their adored Pomeranian Bing Bing. Roxanne is a huge animal lover and most definitely an avid cat fan.
